2020 Gala Highlights

Jes Baru

Jes was born in Israel and studied Industrial Psychology. He got his first degree in Canada, followed by a Masters in NY and finally got his Doctorate in England. He came to Orlando for a 2 year stint …. in 1966! Jes is active on the board and ritual committee at Temple Israel and reads Haftoah.  He has also taught trope to many Bar and Bat Mitzvah students over the years.  He enjoys reading and jogs every day.

Barney Chepenik

In 1973, Barney went into the insurance world and has never looked back.  He has been involved with Federation, the JCC, Kinneret and has worked tireless hours to create a community of family. His mom was a Kinneret resident in 1992 and was the librarian! Barney has a positive attitude and he’s always willing to help.

Joan Forino

Joan grew up in Lynbrook, NY. She worked at the NY telephone company for several years where she met her husband Aldo. They were married for 43 years.  Joan’s motto is to do one good deed a day. She talks to people who are sitting alone and helps people at Publix if they need assistance finding things. Joan has been volunteering at her daughters’ school every day for 2 hours to help in her classroom. Joan says, “If I start a job, I want to finish the job!”

Elaine Gamson

Elaine hails from a small town near Augusta, GA and has been in Orlando for 55 years!  Elaine has been an active and giving member at Ohev Shalom and an active member and volunteer at the Jewish Federation of Greater Orlando and Hadassah. Elaine supports all our local Jewish agencies and are loyal to Israel Bonds, JNF, AIPAC and FIDF. She has been a table captain for Choices for many years and was a chairman of many federation women events.  If there is a women’s event in the community, you’ll find Elaine there!

Harry Lowenstein

Born in Germany, Harry is a survivor and very active at the Holocaust Center.  He and his wife Carol z”l owned and ran a clothing store for 30 years in Kissimmee. As the only department store in town, it sold what everyone wore in Central Florida – jeans, cowboy shirts and boots! Harry has been involved with many organizations and committees including the Merchants Association where he served as President and Kissimmee Utility Authority where he served 2 terms of ten years as Director.  He is a member of the Southwest Orlando Jewish Congregation and has been very active there.

Henry Schilowitz

Born in the Bronx, Henry moved to Valdosta, GA in the late 60’s where he served out a 2-year commission as an OB/GYN in the Air Force.  Henry practiced as an OB/GYN full time until he was 80!  He has been very active with Temple Israel and is an early supporter of the Maitland JCC.  He met Elise in 1961 on a blind date and married her in 1962 while in medical school. “It was love at first site,” he says, “she was the most beautiful girl I’d ever seen.”

Sandi Solomon

Sandi was the first Jewish female commissioner for the city of Casselberry, a position she held for 12 years. During her final two years, she was the vice-Mayor of the city. In her capacity as Commissioner she innovated many programs that made the city a desirable place to live. Sandi is a strong supporter of Jewish causes and of Israel. She has volunteered to work on an IDF Army base in the Northern part of Israel with the task of painting tanks.

Harriet Weiss

Harriet is passionate about helping others. Her professional and personal dedication has impacted tens of thousands of people who have experienced the JCC over the past few decades through various programs. Harriet has also been involved with the Central Florida Jewish Film Festival since its inception 21 years ago. Harriet is committed, dedicated, passionate, and always willing to go the extra mile for anybody in need.
